Half A Toe Is Better Than None (Or Is It?)

Saw a podiatrist this morning concerning the Toe of Doom™. He took some new x-rays, and I got to see the main one. You know how the final bone in the toe comes to a sort of point, almost looking like a space capsule? Well, the Toe of Doom™ doesn't do that. The tip of the bone appears to be gone. Not so good.

Dr. Mandel said he thought I had had a corm on the toe, and it was the source of the path for the infection to enter and take hold. The fact that this has been going on since March concerned him a lot, and he said there were two ways to deal with it: amputating part of the toe, or undergoing a course of IV antibiotics. We discussed my workplace, and the complete lack of benefits there, along with the fact I spend most of the day on my feet.

So next Tuesday I have an appointment with an infectious disease specialist, who will discuss with me IV option. I would have a shunt put in my arm, and Dr. Mandel said he thought I would be able to do it at home. Which is good, as the course of treatment is for twelve weeks. Dr. Mandel said that even if the antibiotics don't manage to clear it up, at least it shouldn't get any worse, which is his main concern.

And if it doesn't work, Stumpy will join Skinny in the pantheon of diminished Paisley digits. Joy.

I really hope it clears up. This ongoing pain is not so good.

Not getting any worse while giving the IV antibiotics a chance to do good sounds like a plan.

As for the rest, yeah, real life shit is spot on, dammit.

Oh honey,

this is freakin' hideous news. I'll a spell of good-healing for you these next few weeks, ok?

Damn, how I hate all the misery caused by people not being able to afford healthcare throughout their lives, their ups and downs.

Won't help you right now, but some of the provisions in the health care act are beginning to kick in for hundreds of thousands of people. Still got a long way to go, and only the Dems can be forced to get that done, with all of us pushing them forward with all the strength we got.

Be brave, take care, I'll try to come in for a visit sometime this winter and bring with me the bottle I could not get to you in May. Nom-noms are coming, they may just not get there until winter.

lots of love and worried hugs of comfort,

Parris

Thanks you, sweetie. I deeply appreciate your kind words and thoughts. So far, things are ok. In fact, the divot seems to be healing up. Mayhap the IV treatment* will deal with it and they won't have to get out the pruning shears and flamethrower. And i do have the Vicoprofen for when it starts hurting, so i have that going for me.

Of course, we'd love to have you visit any time you can. We even have a new air mattress for the bed in the Doms** Suite. And noms sounds wonderful.

*Sadly, this does not involve Led Zeppelin coming to my house and playing the entire album live every day until I am cured.

**For those just joining us, the room is named after Carol Doms, the first person to stay in it (and Doug Triggs, the Other Carol Doms. Don't Ask, Don't Tell). It has nothing to do with what you are thinking of, you preverts. If it did, we'd also have a special guest space in the Sub Basement.

I always wondered about those ring bolts set up in the wall down there ...
