Saw the podiatrist today, and he seemed to think the Toe of Doom™ was doing reasonably well. He had a resident shadowing him, and asked him what the underlying problem was. The resident looked at the TOD and responded:

HAMMERTOE!

I was given an orthotic device* to help the situation, but apparently I will have to provide the parachute pants myself. They and the dancers will be covered by insurance, right?

Saw a podiatrist this morning concerning the Toe of Doom™. He took some new x-rays, and I got to see the main one. You know how the final bone in the toe comes to a sort of point, almost looking like a space capsule? Well, the Toe of Doom™ doesn't do that. The tip of the bone appears to be gone. Not so good.

Dr. Mandel said he thought I had had a corm on the toe, and it was the source of the path for the infection to enter and take hold. The fact that this has been going on since March concerned him a lot, and he said there were two ways to deal with it: amputating part of the toe, or undergoing a course of IV antibiotics. We discussed my workplace, and the complete lack of benefits there, along with the fact I spend most of the day on my feet.

So next Tuesday I have an appointment with an infectious disease specialist, who will discuss with me IV option. I would have a shunt put in my arm, and Dr. Mandel said he thought I would be able to do it at home. Which is good, as the course of treatment is for twelve weeks. Dr. Mandel said that even if the antibiotics don't manage to clear it up, at least it shouldn't get any worse, which is his main concern.

And if it doesn't work, Stumpy will join Skinny in the pantheon of diminished Paisley digits. Joy.

Having already put in 45 hours this week (including 12 yesterday even with a two hour break to see the doctor about the Toe of Doooooooom!™), I will shortly be leaving to do it again, as this particular batch of Ha//mark has to be done today.

As for the TOD™, the doctor was impressed, and not in a good way. He told the student doctor who was shadowing him that if it were any worse, I'd be going to the hospital for IV antibiotics. The amoxicillin that he put me on Monday seems to be helping some, but the TOD™ is still bright red (though it does seem to be healing). The two big toes still have their nails hanging on by threads, and both now are a lovely shade of dark verdigris. I see the doc again next Thursday to see if there is any improvement.

And, just to add to the entertainment, my keft knee has decided to act up. I don't remember hitting it on anything, but by the end of work last night I could barely walk, and it's not much better today. Which will make today that much more fun.
