Numer-o Two-0: R.I.P. Bo Diddley. (hat tip kivasfajo)
One of the great guitar players ever, and a universal influence. An anecdote (not data), follows. During the sessions for the Talking Heads album "Naked," the band was working with a pair of West African percussionists on the song "Ruby Dear." David Byrne asked them if they knew the "Bo Diddley beat," and they said no. Heads drummer Chris Frantz started playing it, and the percussionists immediately joined in, recognizing the classic riff, if not the name of its originator.
And last, but not least, I am not as creative as I thought (though I am the first hit!)
*This was the title of my coilumn when I was the editor of the KaCSFFS clubzine, Cacophony, from Oct. 1982 until Jan. 1993
