So it appears that KC's own Boulevard Brewing, creators of some of the best beers anywhere (I have done a lot of research on this) is being bought by the Belgian brewery Duvel. Everyone please calm down. This is not an InBev-like takeover. This is a merging of two organizations dedicated to making high-quality beers for discerning palates. So let's celebrate with some tunes:

1) The Great Compromise, John Prine (BBC In Concert, London England)

2) The Chant Has Begun, Level 42

3) I Understand, The Hollies

4) I Got You, Wilco (Solid Sound Festival 6.24.11)

5) Lord Of Light [Single Version Edit], Hawkwind

6) Big Butch Bass Bull Fiddle, Corb Lund

7) Shattered, The Rolling Stones

8) Under My Skin, The Sexbots

9) Colouring Of Pigeons; The Knife, Mt. Sims, and Planningtorock

10) Shot Down, The Mummies

onward

11) Ain't Much More to Say, Matthew Mayfield

12) Bigger Burn, Eleni Mandell

13) Me & The Minibar, The Dresden Dolls

Were I not broke, I would be picking up some Duvel to drink tonight. The weekend will include more packing, and the KaCSFFS Hallowe'en party Saturday night at the Writer's Place. Come on by if you're in the area, it should be interesting.

On the plus side, my car is once again conventionally functional, after the usual oddities. Last Friday I had two repair places giving me estimates on replacing the steering column and the passenger side mirror (fixing the damage from the second time it was stolen last summer). One told me they could get a column and fix it on Saturday, so they won. Then it turned out the salvage yard wasn't open Saturday, so it would be Monday. Fine, no prob.

Saw the podiatrist for Toe of Doom 2: This Time It's Tarsal™, Monday, and since I was in a hurry, he was running way behind. Got done (it's doing fine, but not fully healed yet), raced down to the Firestone on Truman to drop off the car, then walked over to Grand to catch a bus to work. Yes, Monday is normally my off day, but there was a lot of stuff to get done, so extra hours.

About 3p, I called to see how things were going, and was told the parts were there and they would be working on it shortly and it would be done by the end of the day. Shortly thereafter, they called back to say that the steering column they had been sent was stripped out where the steering wheel was connected, and the salvage yard would be sending a good one over on Tuesday. Somehow, this did not surprise me.

Tuesday I caught the bus again, and waited and waited to hear. Finally I called, and was told the replacment column was in, and good, and they would be getting the car into the bay shortly. At 5p, they called to say it was done! Dragonet picked me up at work and dropped me off to get the car, which now can be started with a key*, not a screwdriver, like real cars! And has mirrorz! To celebrate this, and topping 47k in iTunes, here's this week's random selections.

1) Rural Explosion, Mojack

2) The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, Oxford Collapse

3) Lady Love, Mike Mains & The Branches

4) The Stone That Speaks, Deadline

Another busy weekend. Rohanna and D2 are heading to St. Louis for Joseph Felknor's graduation shindig, while I stay here and go to the KaCSFFS meeting (it's a picnic, kinda! Indoors! The Writers Place, Valentine and Pennsylvania, KCMO! 6:30! Come on by!), then help out with the Campbell Conference afterparty on Sunday. Should actually have Monday off to start prepping for Soonercon.

*When the mechanic gave me my keyring back, I asked which of the keys on it was the new ignition key, and he looked at me and with a straight face said "Oh, you wanted a key!" then laughed. Came close to going over the counter.

Tomorrow is the Kansas City Science Fiction and Fantasy Society's 40th Anniversary Shindig and Brouhaha. I have to finish the 'zine for it tonight. Saturday might also include a trip to Lawrence, depending on whether or not Rohanna has recovered from whatever bug she has picked up. Sunday might be a ballgame, if it doesn't rain. On the other other hand, after one 90˚+ day, it's been quite fall-like here. I have not expectation of it lasting.

To all past(1) members of KaCSFFS (and if you were one, you know what that means [as opposed to what it stands for, which is a different joke entirely]): The club is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year with a shindig in Sept. I have volunteered/been drafted to put together a 'zine for this occasion. This is a call for contributions to this uinque item. Brief (coupla hundred words tops) pieces on your memories of the club, what it meant to you, what it did to/for you, etc. Send to me by Sept 8 (that's a week from Thursday) via reply here, lj message. The good, the bad, the silly, the sexy (yes Bradley Denton, that means you) -- we want it all. Be a part of history, or something that smells like it. Thank you for your contribution.

(1) Current(2) members as well, but I will be posting this on the club lists and fb page, so they should see it there too.

(2) Yes, AC and DC both invited.

I actually did a list last week, but had to rush into work early again and never got around to posting it. Things are back to semi-normal now (i.e., working 4/7 again), so let's see what we get this time.

1) The Connoisseur, The New Amsterdams

2) Stairway To Heaven, Rock Lobsters

3) She Can Be So Cold, Pacewon and Mr. Green ft. The White Stripes

4) Afternoons And Coffeespoons, Crash Test Dummies

5) Wasted (Feat. Plies) (Dirty), Gucci Mane

6) Orion, Rodrigo Y Gabriela

7) Roddy McCorley, Shane MacGowan & The Popes

8) Only, A Beautiful Machine

9) Castles, Doveman

10) Fire Lances of the Ancient Hyperzephyrians, The Sword

And, because too much is not enough:

11) Another Wise Guy, Mojack

12) It Came Out Of The Sky, Creedence Clearwater Revival

13) The Ballad Of Wendell Scott, Mojo Nixon

And of course, since this is the third weekend of the month, everything is happening, and then some. Rohanna is working on and off at Naka-Con today and tomorrow. Saturday brings the annual KanPoly Dim Sum Orgy at Bo Ling's (on the Plaza, 11a!), then the ConQuesT and KaCSFFS meetings. The club meeting is a chocolate special (not a euphemism), to which we plan on bringing a lovely Schadenfreude pie. Nom nom. And off to work I go, alas not so high (nor a ho, so there).

Tomorrow the smoker gets fired up again, this time for the KaCSFFS Thanksgiving meeting/dinner. Why so early, you ask? Well, the normal third Saturday is smack in the middle of ConTraception, of course! The meeting is at the Writer's Place, and here are the details:

Come feast with your KaCSFFS friends on Saturday November 7, 2009. This years Thanksgiving dinner will again be held at the Writer's Place, 3607 Pennsylvania, KCMO 64111. Starting time will be 5:30 PM for setup, dinner at 6 PM, with a short business meeting to follow.

Food assignment suggestions:
A - J Sides and Salads
K - R Drinks
S - Z Desserts

So if you're in the KC area, come on out and meet people and chow down. And going to ConTra wouldn't be a bad thing either. Saturday will be the last opportunity to get the discounted membership rate, as well. Plus smoked turkey!

Postcard Fail

A good day, got the shopping done, grabbed some good beer at the KS Lukas Liquors. A very fun KaCSFFS Holiday party, with lots of fun people to see. Kyle showed up from Lawrence, and got to see Lyle for the first time in 25 or so years (surprise!). Lots of good conversations.

And in the department of mixed blessings, the Ravens beat the Cowboys, but i am now trailing Animal House 16-6 in the Scum Bowl. I do have to thank them for leaving a lot of points on the bench. Tomorrow will tell the tale.
