I went to the KC Renaissance Festival, to hang out with Dragonet and various friends at the usual last night before the end of the Festival party. I was introduced to one of the SCA people, and we hit it off. Later, we were thrown into a tent by the co-conspirators who introduced us. The next weekend she showed up at the KaCSFFS Hallowe'en party, where she used her first responder/chiurgeon training to keep Dragonet from suffering severe burns on her torso when a pot of hot water exploded on her. A week after that, there she was at ConTraception.

Twenty years later, we are all still together. Was it planned? No. Has it always been easy? Oh hellz noes! But through the ups and downs we have managed to make things work, and here we are today.

Happy anniversary, Rohanna. Love you.

Slept late, didn't wake up until 7.30a. Got up by 8, checked email, got a shower and headed to Lawrence. Stopped at the Farmers' Market to pick up the bagel order; offically sold VerminusRex out. Wandered through the vendors, then headed over to Brits and Au Marche. Picked up a few things. Daw a Kangol-style Guinness hat and Guinness slippers. Maybe another day (hat did look goood, though).

Met Fireguarder at Lawrence Remedial Hospital where she and I discussed plans for printing the Nominee Certificates and winner cards for Anticipation, then took her along to Wheat State for the KanPoly meetup. A good crowd, including 5Rings and Tensegrity, plus some KC people who came up after attending the KCPoly Munch a few times. Good conversation, good pizza, good times.

Dropped Fireguarder at home, then took the back road to KC (no sign of whether the Water Department checked out the broken cutoff valve; we'll have to call them Monday to find out what's going on). After some down time, Rohanna, NPulsifer and I went to Grinders to see Brewer and Shipley and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. It was a lovely evening, and the bands were both good (though Shipley was in less than perfect vocal form; on the other hand, when you've been doing it for 41 years, an off night is to be expected occasionally). After their set, the Daredevils hit the stage and kicked ass. Fronted by three of the five original members (John Dilllon, Steve Cash and Michael "Supe" Granda), they put on a solid 90 minute show, covering the hits while digging reasonably deep into their catalog. Good stuff, indeed.

I should be in bed, since I want to be up by 8a (CDT) to watch Tom Watson attempt to win his sixth British Open tomorrow (today), but I wanted to leave you with my favorite OMD* cut, from their first album, which they did not perform tonight. If there were any justice (or musical sense) in the statehouse, it would be the Missouri State Anthem. Maybe next time.

*No, not Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark. Pay attention

Ah, another thrilling week in happyland almost over. Despite the recent warming trend (which will leaving by the end of the weekend, of course), seem to be stuck in my usual winter blahs. Let's see if some music helps.

1) Single Ladies (New Single), Beyonce

2) All Come True, World Party

3) Extra Savoir-Faire, TMBG

4) Another Set Of Bees In The Museum, The Olivia Tremor Control

5) Strawberry Fields Forever, Candy Flip

6) Days And Days, Concrete Blonde

7) Fixing My Brain, Brad Sucks

8) Sign My Snarling Doggie, The Bobs

9) Man In Need, Richard & Linda Thompson

10) Illogical Boogie, Coconut Monkeyrocket

Bonus for a lovely-looking day (not that I'll get to enjoy it stuck at work, but hey . . .)

11) 19-2000, Gorillaz

12) Kväller I Moskvas Förstäder, Jan Johansson

13) A Feeling (For Someone Else Has Grown), Bette Williams

After today's activity (or continuing lack thereof) at work, Rohanna and I are heading to the Community Christian Church (4601 Main) to relive part of her misspent youth with Danny Cox and Brewer and Shipley. For locals who have heard of the old Vanguard Coffeehouse and want to experience the nostaglia, tickets are $25 at the door. Saturday I'm doing some computer work for and having lunch with Jimmy Hollaman, and then later the ladies and I are having dinner with Lyle Wilson.

Sunday noon will find us chatting and chowing down at the monthly KCPoly Munch, held at McCoy's Public House, at the corner of Westport and Pennsylvania. Attendance has been good for the first two meetings, and all poly-friendly or curious folk are invited to join us for good beer and good food. And somewhere along the way Ro and I plan on seeing "Watchmen."

As I wait for the Vicodin to fully kick in, I shall discuss my weekend, in its many forms.

Cut so I can feel something )
And now it's 1230p, and it seems that the pain has subsided enough for me to assay sleep. But before I go, a belated (by a half hour) happy 200th birthday to Edgar Allan Poe, creator of the mystery and horror genres, as well as supplying, over a century after his death, a raison d'etre for Roger Corman, Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and so many otheres. Had I some amontillado, I would raise a glass to his memory. Instead, I will suggest everyone go out and buy Poe, a new original anthology edited by ConQuesT 40's Toastmaster Ellen Datlow. Help save the economy and buy a couple three copies.

Sleep now, and we'll see what new fun I can get into tomorrow.

Yeah, I'm way behind on posting. Some highlights, and new info I have acquired.

1) Saturday: trip to Lawrence, stocked up on bagels from VerminusRex (if you're in the area, check out his fresh bagels every saturday at the farmer's market [10th and New Hampshire or thereabouts]). Quick stop at Brits and Au Marché (while I went to the Free State and got growlers of their Oktoberfest and Roggen Bock), then off to Wheatstate Pizza for the KanPoly meeting. Back to KC with a stop at Lukas Liquor since we were at that end of town. We decided not to brave the predicted 50K (later estimated at 75K) supplicants to possibly glimpse The One. I went to the KaCSFFS meeting, then we all went to kcrisenphoenix's for the Hallowe'en party. Much fun. I went as Nixon, and got to give shit to the three Sharia Plans and McCain as McCain.

2) Sunday: Baconcats remain undefeated!

3) I found a lovely Brinkmann vertical smoker for $59 at Home Despot, it is now my birthday present to myself. Fireguarder, you can get me a 20 lb. turkey for the Nov meeting.

4) Go Devil Rays!

5) For anyone who will be in the metro area tomorrow, we will be celebrating my natality and the start of the World Series at Charlie Hooper's bar on 63rd St. in Brookside at 7.30. We were going to attack Eric at his new job as bartender at Sharp's, but he's going to see Ben Folds tomorrow night (oh yeah, Chumpy ain't gay). Feel free to show up and buy me a beer.

Oh, and the info: I am exactly one day younger than Carrie Fisher. Personally, I think I have aged much better.
