Still. It remains several sizes too large, and is a dull, glowering red down the inside from heel to arch. There's a spot on the ankle that is quite sore to the touch, and I presume the rest of the pain is from everything being stretched and pressurized. A pegleg is looking like a good option.
But that's not what I came here to talk about. Last weekend you all were denied the wonders of my Random 10+, because we were busy getting ready to head to the sunny climes of St. Louis. We were making our first road trip since Archon last July to join numerous friends on the Great Occasional Goodwill Tour, the brainchild of Mike and Karla Weaver. The concept is quite simple: A bus is rented, a cooler full of fine beverages is loaded on it, and the soon-to-be-loaded riders proceed to follow a shaky itinerary to a variety of thrift stores throughout the metro area, with occasional stops at any garage and estate sales we might spot (the look on people's faces when the bus stops in front of their house and the horde pours forth is always good for laughs).
Back to Friday. Dragonet2 and I rigged a bed for Rohanna in the back of the van, and she slept most of the way there quite comfortably. We travelled with NPulsifer, Tanya and Eric in a second car, and had a nice, easy trip. It was odd to feel the body and brain getting back into the road mode, like the old saw about falling off a bicycle. We stopped in Columbia to stretch, and discovered gas there was $3.38, as opposed to the $3.59 it had been in KC. It was 3.28 in St. Louis, by the way.
We managed to deal with a minor route change due to construction, and arrived at the Weavers's mid afternoon. The original plan had been to go to the Cardinals game that night, but alas, when it came time to get tickets, it was SRO, and that didn't sound as much fun, so we just hung out with many St. Louis friends, eating pizza and drinking much beer, with occasional comments about that cheap Belgian crap the local brewery was turning out.
Saturday dawned hot, and some fourteen of us gathered at 9 a.m. to board the bus, with our most cromulent driver Michelle. We started off with a garage sale around the corner, where the person in charge remembered us from the last time we'd done this. One member of the group set off much speculation when she purchased a lovely wedding dress for a mere $20 (name withheld inasmuch as she hasn't officially said yes yet). There was a longg trip to the western suburbs for a garage sale, and a wide variety of stops on the way back. The tired, hungry and somewhat wobbly group made it back around 4 p.m., and were joined by many others for a fine dinner and much talk, laughter, bad singing (sorry, i'd been drinking), test drives of the recumbent bike and general fun until late at night. For the record, I only bought one item, a shirt (there were others I liked, but then tended to be Mediums, which I haven't been in longer than I care to consider), but it's a shirt that will haunt Pooch's dreams, once he sees it.
The best thing about the whole trip came Sunday, when Rohanna (who was one of the last to crash) woke up and declared she felt "normal" for the first time in a long time. She made the trip back in her usual shotgun seat, and was awake the whole time. She had her penultimate Taxol treament yesterday, and we shall see how quickly she recuperates from it. All in all, it was a great time, and we all thank the Weavers for putting up with all the craziness.
And now, some music to soothe the savage foot:
1) February (Quodliphonik Remix), Quodliphonik feat. Calendar Girl
2) Alabama, Neil Young
3) A tree STOry, Schizoïd Bass
4) I'm So Tired [Beatles] (no idea who is performing this live, maybe Wilco)
5) Helpless, Neil Young (05-21-2002, Brixton Academy, London, England)
6) Land of 1000 Dances, Steve Cropper
7) It Won't Be Long (Live) (beatles), Franz Ferdinand
8) Fire & Ice, Rasputina
9) I Can't Understand, Los Lobos (The Fillmore San Francisco, CA December 6, 2003)
10) Underground Sun, Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3
And then that happened:
11) Snow In Summer, The Cure
12) Strangled Road, Six Organs Of Admittance
13) I Found A New Friend, TMBG (all seven seconds of it!)
And off we go to the long weekend. Locals, stop by and see Dragonet2 at the KC RenFest. She's in the jeweller's booth near the elephant rides, near the entrance from the Sandstone parking lot. Buy lots of stuff.
