Not So Random Holiday 10+
Dec. 21st, 2007 06:56 amUpdate: miscellaneous commentary and links added that I meant to have there in the first place, along with a song I can't believe I forgot. I was tired last night, and overslept a half hour this morning.
As most of you know, I am not especially enamored of many of the trappings of the multi-holiday season, and particularly not of the aural treacle known as "Christmas music" that spews like toxic, sonic sludge from every speaker starting somewhere around St. Swithin's Day. I have, however, collected some interesting examples of both traditional songs uniquely interpreted by talented artists as well as new material for the season. Herewith, my favorites, with the album whence they came:
'Twas The Night Before Christmas, Henry Rollins, O Come All Ye Faithful
A great version, with helicopters, gunfire and sirens in the background. Very Henry.
The Carol of the Olde Ones, The Arkham Carolers, A Very Scary Solstice
Everyone needs this cd, and the companion, and the movies these wonderful people at the
HP Lovecraft Historical society have put together. Get the tunes here

Santa's Got A Brand New Bag (Papa's Got A Brand New Bag), The Bobs, Too Many Santas!
Pretty much the world's only rock and roll a capella band.
Santa's Polka, Brave Combo, It's Christmas, Man!
The world's greatest polka-cha cha-conjunto-salsa party band. See them live. Do it!
I Believe In Father Christmas, Greg Lake, A Rock 'N' Roll Christmas
Merry Fucking Christmas, Mr. Garrison, Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics
Christmas Song, Jethro Tull, Living In The Past
"Psst. Hey, Santa, pass us that bottle, will ya?"
Talking Christmas Goodwill Blues, John Wesley Harding, God Made Me Do It - The Christmas EP
Father Christmas, The Kinks, A Rock 'N' Roll Christmas
Do You Fear What I Fear?, Matt Fahey, Jennifer Taub And Josh Thoemke, A Very Scary Solstice
Not only a great song, but it namechecks Farnsworth Wright, bitches!
2000 Miles, The Pretenders, The Singles
Fairytale Of New York, The Pogues, If I Should Fall From Grace With God
A classic, featuring Kirsty MacColl, who sadly was killed 18 Dec 2000
Happy Xmas (War Is Over), John Lennon, The John Lennon Collection
If you want it
Christmas in Prison, John Prine, Sweet Revenge
How did I forget this?
And off to work, where we might get out early, or sit on our hands until 5p, depending on the mood of Scrooge, um, Darrell. And I'm supposed to be off Monday, but who knows what he'll do. Anyway, try not to get trampled in the last-minute shopping rush.
