Yesterday was the first trip out to the ballyard for us. I began the day helping Kalimeg with her moving adventures. A large group, including Seantaclaus, NPulsifer, our son Eric and several of his friends assembled at the new digs and made short work of emptying a pod full of boxes (mostly books, oddly enough). The NPulsifer went by Home Despot, where we each bought a mini Kingsford kettle grill. Then it was back home for me, where I cleaned and did dishes while waiting for Rohanna and her cousin Dee to arrive. We chatted for a bit, then NPulsifer, Gisele and Eric and our daughter Heather (who was visiting for the weekend from Chicago) arrived, along with Eric's friends for the excursion to the ballpark.

Now it had been raining since the top of the page*, and the temperature never got up to the 70˚ we were promised, but that did not deter us (much). We got to the stadium and started the tailgating process (drinking, waiting for the coals to be ready, drinking, cooking, drinking, eating, drinking). The grill worked great, and the brats and chicken breasts were wonderful. And there was beer.

At one point, an older gentleman wandered by us, accompanied by several teenage girls, each of whom had many many strings of beads on their arms. I made some remark about New Orleans being in the other direction, which seemed to confuse him, but he recovered to explain they were selling the beads as a fundraiser for the girls' softball team. Damon bought Mattie couple of strands, and the groupe headed off. Heather mentioned the guy didn't seem to get my NO reference, then said, "What you should have done was said to me, 'Heather, you know what you have to do to get beads,' just to see what his reaction would have been." This is my daughter saying this to me, folks! I love her so, even with her K-State issues.

Finally we entered the stadium, and got the big prize: Zack Greinke bobblheads! Heather and Dee hadn't been to the renovated Kauffman Stadium, so we walked all the way around the concourse, and acquired beer from the Boulevard stand along the way. Rohanna and Dee went to their seats (under the overhang of the second deck, protected fro mthe rain if not the rapidly dropping temps), while the rest of us went down to the party porch, where we remained for the next 12 wet, cold innings.

Yes, you read that right. The Royals and Twins were so happy to be there they decided to go an extra third of a game for us. Alas, the Twinkies managed to prevail, 9-7. Heather quickly got into the aesthetic of the Party Porch, and spent much time screaming imprecations at the opposing outfielders and support for the Royals players, particularly David DeJesus, who had a great night at the plate (single, double and triple in his first three at bats; unfortunately he couldn't get the tater to complete the cycle).

It was cold, it was wet, it was great. Can't wait for the next time we go.

or start taping these events. I totally missed the bead man and the ensuing exchange. Must have been when I was out hunting up the porta-potty.
