Doooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooomed! Surprise, right?

Saw Dr. Driks, the infectious disease specialist, this afternoon. Things did not start off well when I got there and they had no record of my appointment, but the staff were very efficient and quickly got my records. Dr. Driks was very good: excellent manner, inquisitive, and straightforward. Asked a number of questions no one else had. At one point he asked if I had ever lived in tropical areas, ann added "That's related to leprosy."

I replied "No, and though I have been to Texas, I have never petted nor kissed an armadillo."

He looked at me in surprise and asked how I knew about that. I told him I had acquired a lot of random information over the years, and he seemed impressed.

In addition to the infection, he told me he thought I had peripheral neuropathy in my feet, and demonstrated by pinching nails on both feet, which I could barely feel. He will be talking to my doctor and the podiatrist to work out the details, but he thinks the best course of action is to go ahead and remove the first knuckle of the toe before the infection spreads. I'll have to have a pick inserted in my arm for antibiotics before and after the decapitation. Ideally this will happen after SMOFcon, as I would rather not have to go there on crutches and all that.
