Woke up at 5.30a to bright sunshine. Went back to sleep. We ICQ'd Jeff, who had his own adventures last night (and might be posting them here), and waited for him to show up. At 11a, Margene had waited long enough, and we went for breakfast to a mall around the corner. The American House has a lunch buffet for 1200 yen (and where the fuck does one find the equivalent of the "option" key on this Mac-forsaken POS Microsatan keyboard? Buehler? Anyone?) which was pretty good overall. I had Adam Reuter try the pizza first, and he confimed my suspicion that the topping drizzled on it was mayonnaise.

After eating, I went back to the hotel to grab the camera, and found Jeff in the lobby. We headed back, but couldn't find Margene and Adam anywhere in the mall (it is a big, 4 story mall, but you'd think a redhead and a guy taller than me would stand out a bit), so Jeff and I went to Crawford's Crabshack and had a Red Hook beer (me, IPA, him, ESB) and then a (small) bottle of sake each while discussing many things. After a bit more wandeing (the World Sports Store had MLB hats, including the Royals, but they didn't carry Japanese baseball paraphernalia), we came back to the hotel to find Margene. She's napping now as we await word from Jeff that Darice and her mom have arrived and we make plans for the evening.

I find it quite exhilarating to be in a place where I have no clue about what's going on or where I am. Other than the fact that it is both hotter and muggier here than at home (walking around outside is like forcing one's way through an endless forest of damp towels),I'm liking it a lot.

More later.

So Adam's official job is going to be "taster", is it? Well, he is young and has an iron constitution. How are the vending machines>? Any really strange ones yet?

It gives him something to do besides look good. So far, no really odd vending machines. And no beer machines in the hotel I can find, damnit. We should be doing some more exploration today.

I've never actually seen any particularly interesting vending machines here. Just drinks, cigarettes, ice cream, the ones at fast food restaurants (Japanese-style fast food, that is, where you get a ticket and they bring you food), and the occasional newspaper one.

But that sucks about the beer, dude. I love those things.
